Pleural Plaques Update

Despite widespread media coverage and growing popular support the Government have failed to make a decision on whether to legislate and overturn the Johnson case which would enable the suffers of pleural plaques to claim compensation.

A decision has been delayed until the Autumn with an assurance from the Government that the medical evidence will be reviewed.

Plaques Bill passes through committee stage at Westminster

The Damages (Asbestos-Related Conditions) Bill passed through its committee stage this week. The Private Members’ Bill, presented by Andrew Dismore MP, would overturn the House of Lords judgment in the Johnston case, and enable people with pleural plaques in England and Wales to claim compensation.

Government announcement on pleural plaques expected shortly

Gordon Brown has promised that action will be taken shortly to help victims of pleural plaques.
In a response to a question from Mr. Stephen Hepburn (Jarrow) (Lab) who asked what he intended to do about the thousands of predominantly working-class pleural plaques sufferers who have been robbed of their compensation by unjust decisions in the law courts.
