The recognised use of asbestos fibres in the production of inexpensive, durable insulation and fire retardant products throughout the peak years of the mid to late twentieth century was not limited to the most well-known occupations of manufacturing, construction, shipbuilding and car assembly.

The marking of 100 days before the start of the London 2012 Olympics has not been without controversy.

The issue of asbestos awareness and the continuing failure by some property owners or building firms to implement the required procedures and controls can be due to a lack of knowledge, training or simply ignoring the rules to minimise time and expense.

Corrugated cement roofing is probably the most common and identifiable form of asbestos, which many property owners and building firms are likely to encounter whenever renovation, removal or demolition work is being carried out.

The introduction of an additional category of “Notifiable Non-Licensable Work” (NNLW) in the updated Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, issued on 6th April, is intended to bring an extra layer of health and safety procedure to the renovation, demolition and disposal of waste building material at a property where any exposure to asbestos is to be prevented.
