Checks on how schools outside of local authority control are managing asbestos have revealed that most have adequate arrangements in place – though 17 per cent fell below acceptable standards in relation to management procedures.

The gentleman, aged 71, from Crewe contracted asbestosis when he worked in the rail depot. He started with British Rail in 1955 as an apprentice and worked for them for over 34 years, working his way up to Works Department Inspector.

Asbestos suffers in Northern Ireland won a legal victory in the Supreme Court, meaning that those with pleural plaques can now claim compensation again. It is now possible for pleural plaques victims in Scotland and Northern Ireland to claim, however victims suffering in England and Wales can not. 

The New England Journal of Medicine has reported that for seven years after 9/11 thousands of people were exposed to a dust cloud of building materials and sand chemical products containing particles of asbestos, lead and mercury.

The family of Andy Witney have voiced concerns over his treatment at Churchill Hospital in Oxford.  Andy died in August 2010 after a 5 year battle with asbestos related cancer.
