It was reported in Health & Safety at Work Magazine that M&S will have to pay a £1 million pound fine and costs for putting shoppers, staff and construction workers at risk of exposure during the refurbishment of its Reading store in 2006.  The Judge at the hearing also commented that the company had failed to make a “proper and full apology”.

The Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) have investigated claims that chrysotile asbestos in asbestos cement products is altered into a non-asbestos fibrous material called Casitile.

A building contractor from South East London has been fined for running a construction site, which led to workers being exposed to asbestos-containing materials.

Checks on how schools outside of local authority control are managing asbestos have revealed that most have adequate arrangements in place – though 17 per cent fell below acceptable standards in relation to management procedures.

The gentleman, aged 71, from Crewe contracted asbestosis when he worked in the rail depot. He started with British Rail in 1955 as an apprentice and worked for them for over 34 years, working his way up to Works Department Inspector.
