The call by many concerned health, legal and asbestos rights groups for a total global ban of asbestos is certainly not new but is getting more pronounced as each new set of statistics is released, which show the persistence of asbestos-related diseases such as abestosis.

Asbestos exposure is almost always linked to asbestosis or the more aggressive and fatal mesothelioma. Once the microscopic fibres of asbestos material enter the body and embed themselves in the mesothelium – the membranes which line the chest and abdominal cavities, and cover the lungs, heart and abdomen – they irritate the surrounding cells, causing them to replicate randomly and uncontrollably, and develop into a malignant tumour.

More than half of work-related deaths from six major cancers in the UK are due to asbestos, according to a recent London-based public health report, and estimates are greater than those currently used in UK health and safety strategy planning.

Whilst Government administrations come and go, and the latest schools system and curriculum initiatives unveiled with new layers of management put into place, the actual fabric of the buildings are consistently ignored, where an ageing nemesis lies in wait, ready to inflict more damage than an ill-conceived educational policy might sustain.
