An unforeseen consequence of the recent coalition government cancellation of the Building Schools for the Future Programme (BSF) is the increased asbestos exposure risk to pupils and teaching staff at many current school buildings built before 1970.

The long latency periods – of up to 40 years or more – which occurs from first exposure to asbestos to the appearance of asbestosis symptoms, are well known. Victims can come from all walks of life, beyond the traditional asbestos manufacturing or handling workplace environments.

The call by many concerned health, legal and asbestos rights groups for a total global ban of asbestos is certainly not new but is getting more pronounced as each new set of statistics is released, which show the persistence of asbestos-related diseases such as abestosis.

Asbestos exposure is almost always linked to asbestosis or the more aggressive and fatal mesothelioma. Once the microscopic fibres of asbestos material enter the body and embed themselves in the mesothelium – the membranes which line the chest and abdominal cavities, and cover the lungs, heart and abdomen – they irritate the surrounding cells, causing them to replicate randomly and uncontrollably, and develop into a malignant tumour.

More than half of work-related deaths from six major cancers in the UK are due to asbestos, according to a recent London-based public health report, and estimates are greater than those currently used in UK health and safety strategy planning.
