The recent death of a 91 year old man and his wife from mesothelioma - even though neither had ever been exposed to asbestos at their places of work but instead contracted the fatal malignant cancer in their own home – highlights the lack of asbestos awareness to the hidden dangers of the deadly material likely to be present in any building constructed up until the end of the twentieth century.

Up until the 1970s and 80s, countless products were manufactured every day in the UK using asbestos as an inexpensive insulation and fire retardant material.

Nothing illustrates the sheer lack of asbestos awareness of the health risks that exposure to the deadly material would bring to countless thousands of people who continue to suffer today than its’ use as fake snow during the Christmas season.

New research suggests that both age and gender differences can influence susceptibility to developing the fatal and incurable asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma, and the survival rate at the point of confirmed diagnosis.

The most deadly form of asbestosis disease, the incurable malignant cancer, mesothelioma, is almost always diagnosed in the mesothelium, i.e. the membrane lining many of the body’s organs and cavities. However, it is not unknown for the fatal disease to spread to a different and unexpected area of the body after treatment.
