Research into how asbestos cells interact with human cells and the affect on the body’s immune system using nanotube technology seeks to better understand the formation and treatment of the deadly asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma.

As a low cost source of heat insulation and a fire retardant, there was no end to the variety of products that asbestos material was used for during the UK’s peak periods of manufacturing with the deadly mineral.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have just announced the launch of their ongoing ‘Hidden Killer’ campaign, in which they will be working with asbestos training providers to promote and provide a total of 4,000 hours of free asbestos awareness training places for construction trade workers across the UK, from 3rd October to 25th November 2011.  The  number of asbestos-related deaths, which still occur each year is estimated to be 4,000.

A new study into mesothelioma cancer has found that a genetic mutation may be responsible for an increased susceptibility in some individuals to contracting the deadly disease from exposure to the asbestos material.

The raising of asbestos awareness, especially since the first Asbestos Regulations of 1969, which simply aimed to ‘manage asbestos contact’, and the evolution of legislation to adequately control and, ultimately, prohibit the use of the white chrysotile form of the hazardous material in 1999, has always been slow and contested every step of the way.
