While many workers in the traditional manufacturing and engineering industries, which used asbestos as a low-cost source of insulation and fire retardant material fell victim to asbestosis diseases, it is those men employed in the building trades, including carpenters, joiners, plumbers, heating and ventilating engineers, electricians and electrical fitters, who are most at danger.

Asbestos awareness of the continued health risks likely to be posed by the presence of chrysotile white asbestos in schools has long been a major cause for urgent concern.

Exposure to asbestos in the UK is mistakenly thought of as a rare occurrence, mostly confined to isolated instances when remains of the material are uncovered in a premises, most frequently when schools, hospitals or department stores are about to be renovated or demolished.

Can any building contractor really claim genuine lack of asbestos awareness when encountering unidentified or suspect material onsite? Are local authorities, responsible for public buildings such as schools, hospitals and libraries, not sensitive to the issue of hidden asbestos?

Wilfully ignoring warnings or simply cutting corners to save time and money?
