The battle lines have been drawn up for quite some time now, whenever the issue of white asbestos rears its undoubtedly, contentious head! And that’s despite the many years of developing public asbestos awareness and putting much needed preventative and asbestos disposal legislation into place.

The long latency periods – of up to 40 years or more – which occurs from first exposure to asbestos to the appearance of asbestosis symptoms, are well known. Victims can come from all walks of life, beyond the traditional asbestos manufacturing or handling workplace environments.

The call by many concerned health, legal and asbestos rights groups for a total global ban of asbestos is certainly not new but is getting more pronounced as each new set of statistics is released, which show the persistence of asbestos-related diseases such as abestosis.

The banning of materials manufactured from asbestos in the UK, the US, Australia and many other industrialised countries around the world, does not stop others from both producing and exporting asbestos containing products known to cause fatal asbestos-related diseases.

The Construction Safety Campaign has just this week released details of a mass rally protest against the Canadian industry export of asbestos to the developing world, to be held on Canada’s National Day, Thursday 1st July, at Canada House, Trafalgar Square, London.
