The presence of asbestos in the daily lives of the ordinary man and woman at their place of work throughout most of the twentieth century cannot be underestimated.

The recent death of a 91 year old man and his wife from mesothelioma - even though neither had ever been exposed to asbestos at their places of work but instead contracted the fatal malignant cancer in their own home – highlights the lack of asbestos awareness to the hidden dangers of the deadly material likely to be present in any building constructed up until the end of the twentieth century.

The health risks from asbestos material still hidden in both public, commercial and residential properties around the UK are all too often an asbestos awareness blind spot with some property owners and the building contractors they hire to carry out renovations.

Asbestos awareness of the serious health risks of exposure and the breathing in of airborne fibres should always be urgent priority, not least, to be legally compliant with the ‘General Requirements’ of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006.

The risk of exposure to asbestos in schools is an issue that is not going to go away anytime soon. Especially when building contractors fail to carry out the necessary procedures for asbestos risk assessment to prevent the release of the deadly fibre dust.
