Research conducted in the last five years consistently shows a worrying increase in the number of claims from individuals who, because of an original lack of asbestos awareness, had inadvertently been exposed to asbestos fibres, and as a result, became terminally ill from contracting asbestosis or mesothelioma.

It has been widely reported on the BBC and various papers that asbestos in schools is putting children and staff at risk.

The estimated future cost of UK asbestos compensation claims, having first been estimated to have almost doubled between 2004 and 2008, were forecast to reach £11bn for the period 2010-2050.

Asbestos is not a product of modern technology. Yet despite the evidence of severe health risks related to exposure to asbestos dating as far back as the first century, the production of products containing asbestos continued to grow until the mid 1970s, with a lack of understanding and awareness that still has fatal consequences today.

News that the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has just published a revised guidance on managing asbestos risks, entitled ‘Asbestos: The Survey Guide’, aimed at anyone surveying or removing asbestos from business premises, is a reminder of a former lack of asbestos awareness in the workplace, which still causes so many illnesses and fatalities today.
