Whilst news of large scale, asbestos industries continue to predominate amongst the 52 known, active mineral using nations, principally Canada, India, China and Russia, stories in the UK press regularly surface, which serve as a reminder of this country’s own horrific legacy of asbestos awareness denial.

Latest estimates forecast cases of mesothelioma are likely to peak at around 2,500 a year in the next ten years. It was therefore, landmark news in August, when a high court ruled that an employer responsible for exposing a former worker in the 1950s to asbestos, who later died from contracting the deadly cancer, mesothelioma, should pay the hospice a part of the mesothelioma compensation awarded for the care received.

Throughout much of the 20th century, and before asbestos awareness was acknowledged for the horrific and mostly fatal consequences of exposure, the deadly insulation material was widely used for it’s cheap corrosion and heat resistant properties in the world’s shipbuilding industries and dockyards, including the UK.

The family of Kenneth Wildman have won a £48,500 payout after Mr Wildman died of mesothelioma, a lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos dust. Mr Wildman worked as an Engineer/ Foreman 1960-1988 at Royal George Mill and came into contact with asbestos whilst carrying out his duties.
